Steve/Bucky, future fic
(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 02:31 am (UTC)(link)Post-CATWS, when Steve and Sam find Bucky, and bring him in from the cold, and bring him back to himself, save him, then when Bucky is recovered, tired but himself, he hugs Steve because he loves him and he's home and Steve is like, ooh, yay, we'll be a couple now! And Bucky turns him down.
And Steve is sad about that but it's fine, they're best friends! And they and their new 21st century friends all fight crime! A couple years in the future, Steve is okay with that one time Bucky shot him down, it's a thing that happened and it's cool, but then Bucky hits on him.
And it's because, the first time, Bucky thought Steve deserved better than Bucky, who was tired and broken and sad and he thought Steve deserved someone whole and happy. And Bucky's basically spent the intervening years learning to be comfortable with himself again SO HE COULD BE READY FOR LOVE.
