Fill: I'm Yours to the End of the Line (1/?)
(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)Also, expect spoilers for The Winter Soldier movie eventually. I decided to build this mostly using the MCU, and very little comic background, which means basically that there is no Red Room, because MCU has never mentioned it. When they gave Natasha's birthdate on screen I about jumped out of my chair in outrage, but that's beside the point. Though there was kind of a Russian connection, with the speaking Russian once and the Russian file Natasha gave Steve at the end. So I don't know, just enjoy.

Growing up a male sub in Brooklyn is just asking to get the shit kicked out of you. Of course, when the two of them go out, nobody looks at Bucky and thinks 'fairy', even when he's wearing earrings or jewelry. They look at scrawny little Steve and assume.
Most of the time, Bucky finds it hilarious, because Steve is so obviously a Dom if you talk to him for two seconds. Other times, Steve has to jump on Bucky's back to get him to stop pounding on the other guy. Then Steve takes him home, puts him on his knees, pets his hair until Bucky's hands stop shaking. He doesn't know why he gets like that sometimes, but Steve always takes care of him.
They have a rough time of it, especially once they move out of Bucky's parents' place. Steve is sick every winter and Bucky gets harassed at his job, but it's theirs and it works. Steve even gets them involved in a sub's rights movement that's been gaining traction slowly since women's suffrage.
Then it's December of the year Bucky turns twenty-two, and suddenly they're at war. Steve is convinced he should join up, but he's so sickly and frail that the recruiter denies him. Bucky isn't sure what to do with Steve's mood afterward, just lets him hold Bucky down and bite into his skin.
It's less than a year before they change the law to allow male subs into the military, to include them in the draft. They need more bodies. There is a clamoring of protest – subs are too mentally weak for combat, the church and a lot of other people say. The government can't expect to call on you to fight and die for your country when you're barred the vote, the sub's rights movements say.
Bucky doesn't give a shit about the vote. He gives a shit about the letter he gets in the mail.
He carries it around for a whole day, trying to decide what to do. He's tempted to lie to Steve and say he's enlisted. It's a prettier thing to say, and it's a lie that might make him feel better, but.
But. He doesn't actually want to go. Steve has always been the noble one. Bucky just lives his life in hope for his approval.
“I don't want to leave you,” Bucky admits, after showing Steve the letter. “Who's going to take care of you?”
Steve's face looks – sad. “I know, Buck,” he says. “But you try too hard to take care of me. It's not good for you. Maybe this will be.”
