“I had my suspicions,” she shrugged, “though it does explain why Dr. Bhatnagar had level 8 clearance. As for everyone, well it's really a matter of time since your file would've been in the data dump. Though that's not the most salient question right now is it?”

She wants to know about the mark and all it entails, and Steve doesn't quite know how to begin to answer – he can barely sort it out for himself and anytime he does his thoughts feel like an angry buzz of hornets. Anxiety, and shame, and confusion – and how could he be so stupid, how could he have let this happen, and – he pushes it back he can break down later, right now he just needs to –

He pulls out a beatific smile, “I don't know, I've had orbital fractures before the serum even --”

“That claim is so fresh its practically still bleeding Steve,” her voice is harsh, “it wouldn't happen to belong to a mutual friend of ours would it?”

Sam breaks in, “Look man, it's okay if you don't want to get into all the gory details but if the Winter Soldier is your long lost sweetheart, that's something we maybe should know.”

And that's the problem isn't it? Bucky wasn't – hell, he didn't even know, and now he's – something must show on his face because Nat and Sam suddenly look like they've been sucker punched, and no, they're getting the wrong idea, they – its not, it wasn't – it wasn't like that –

Sam leans forward, pulls his hand into both of his and grips tight, “I know you think he's your friend --”

“He is.” He grinds it out because really if they're gonna blame Bucky for that, they might as well blame him as well, if Bucky had been in his right mind it never would've happened, “look it wasn't, it's not what you think,” his breaths are coming out faster, his heart monitor is picking up, “he didn't, he's not --”

“Ok,” Sam smoothes his thumb over his knuckle, “ok.”

They are clearly not totally convinced by his rousing defense, shit Steve's getting a tension headache, he's suppose to be good at this (except that's not true really, he's never really been good at talking about his personal shit, or about anything that really mattered, not back during the war when Bucky was clearly worn thin, not even before then after his mother died) so instead he stubbornly sets his jaw and says, “Look, I missed a dose of my suppressants and you can guess what happened after, I know it's stupid but it is what it is, and I had as much part in it as he did.”

He looks at Sam who looks like he wants to disagree about Steve calling himself stupid (a first time for everything), then at Natasha, who can't quite meet his eyes but she does gives him a curt nod. This clearly isn't going to be the last he hears of this.
