Back in the 40s it was believed that soulmates had to be romantic partners, so Bucky and Steve were devastated when it turned out that they weren't soulmates.

Fast-forward to the 21st centuries where people understand that soulmates can be platonic. But its relatively rare so the common expectation is that soulmates are always a couple.

Natasha and Steve are platonic soulmates and constantly have to tell people that no, they're not together and they already have boyfriends.
