Marks: Steve/Bucky, soulmate AU

I'm really, really sorry, but I can't seem to come up with something to do this justice. Here's a really short thing that I hope you like, and I hope someone gives you a better fill.

^^^^^^

^^^^^^^
For as long as the Asset could remember, he'd had a mark right over his heart. Elegant writing spelled out the word "Bucky?" in a gentle blue. Underneath the question mark, the dot was a series of circles in red white and blue, with a tiny white star in the center.

"Who is Bucky?" was always one of his first questions when he saw it.

He never got a satisfactory answer. He didn't know why he had the mark. It wasn't useful. It didn't help him stay functioning. But it was there.

He knew, though he didn't remember, that his Handlers had tried removing the mark in the past. But his skin always healed, and it always returned.

The Asset turned his mind from the strange marking, and returned to his task.

^^^^^^^

Captain Rogers was on record as not having a mark. He had never had a mark in his life. Pictures had shown that he didn't have a mark.

So, as he was pulled from the ice and cut from his uniform, the nurse gasped as she saw the writing over his heart. "Who the Hell is Bucky?" was written in a bold copperplate black ink. The dot of the "i" and the point of the question mark were both little red stars.

When it was pointed out, Captain Rogers didn't say anything, but he did look like he was going to cry.

No one mentioned it again.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"Bucky?" Steve asked in disbelief?

"Who the Hell is Bucky?" the Asset replied, irritated beyond all measure that someone actually said the word on his chest- and it was his target.

But the target had too many helpers and the Asset wasn't able to kill him.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"The man on the bridge. Who was he?"

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"A lot of people are going to die, Buck. I can't let that happen."

"Don't make me do this."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You're my mission!"

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

He was Bucky. He would never forget again. He leaned up and kissed the words on Steve's chest, the words that showed what he'd been through, but also the words that showed that they were meant to be- just like they'd always hoped.

^^^^

Again, OP, I'm sorry this is so short and choppy, but this is what demanded to be written.

Aw. I never considered soulmate AUs before, but maybe they do have potential!
