After waking up from the ice and finding out that everyone he knew is dead or very old, Steve finds it painful to connect with people. After the Avengers and everything he finds a way of coping with being around people and even having conversations and thing. He views them as already dead, in his mind the conversations and interactions that he is having are just memories and these people are already long dead like his friends. Then the winter Soilder happens and his coping mechanism starts to break down and with it, the wall protecting him from his grief.
