Fill: I'm Yours to the End of the Line (11/?)
(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)He doesn’t know which Sir he means anymore.
Something crashes down to his left, and then the floor is falling away. The Soldier catches himself with the Weapon, doesn’t make a sound at the familiar pain of it reaching into his chest as it pulls his weight abruptly to a stop. Sir – the Captain – falls. The Soldier watches and it feels familiar, watching the man in red, white, and blue get smaller and smaller with distance. There’s cold, and a scream, and “Bucky, no!” shouted like the world is ending.
Bucky. That was what Sir called him. The Soldier tries it on in his head as he watches Sir hit the water. Your name is James Buchanan Barnes. You’re my wife.
A name makes him a person.
The Soldier – Bucky, Sir named him Bucky – has let go with the Weapon and fallen after Sir before he realizes he’s made the decision to do so. I can’t let him die, he thinks. It’s his responsibility to protect Sir, except that violates his mission. He hits the water with the sharp pain in his head from mission orders becoming a conflict with reality.
He is allowed to make tactical changes to missions. This is not a tactical change. This is a violation. Hydra will punish him.
He has to make sure the Captain lives.
It is the single mindedness of that thought that allows Bucky to drag Sir up onto the shore with only three functioning limbs. He waits a moment to make sure Sir is breathing, and then goes to be punished.
Bucky waits for two days in a safe house in Virginia for Hydra to come for him. There are rations, which he eats a little of to keep his strength up, but doesn't dare eat more without someone to tell him it's okay. He helps himself to the medical supplies, because field care is familiar, hooking himself up to a saline IV and putting his shoulder back into place. He can’t manage to wrap his ribs. He leaves them to heal on their own, or for Them to repair later.
The news is talking about SHIELD and Hydra. They say Alexander Peirce was secretly the head of Hydra, that many SHIELD personnel had been recruited under the auspices of Hydra.
The news says Alexander Peirce is dead.
On the third day, he wakes to soldiers with M4s closing in and kills three and injures another two in order to get clear. They will have backup and intelligence personnel handling the operation, so it’s better to clear the operation than take the time to kill them all. The second safe house he tries has already been compromised.
Bucky walks. He’s not sure where to go.
He's broken and failed his mission. He needs to be punished and put back in the machine so that he can be made better. But everywhere he looks the news is saying that Hydra has been decimated by the efforts of Captain America and Agent Romanoff. The entirety of SHIELD has been poured all over the internet.
So. All his SHIELD affiliated locations are compromised. Bucky starts heading back towards DC, thinking of an abandoned bank and a chair in a vault. He's fairly certain they had been avoiding SHIELD when they set up that location. It is probably secure, and carries the convenience of Them being able to punish and reprogram him in the same location.
Bucky doesn't make it to the bank vault. He is in a bus traveling through the city, wearing civilian clothes he picked up at the first safe house, and they stop outside the Smithsonian Museum. There is a banner out front advertising a Captain America exhibit. Bucky's not sure what compels him, but he gets off the bus and pulls the brim of his cap low before entering the museum.
He is looking for Sir, for Captain America and the man Bucky needed to live in opposition to his mission. He finds James Buchanan Barnes.
